The Barossa museum collection is housed in the historic Tanunda post office and telegraph station building which was opened in 1866. The museum collection represents the social, economic and domestic life of the Barossa settlers and their descendants. The largest group of early settlers were german Lutherans settling in the Barossa from 1842. The Barossa valley archives & historical trust inc. Was founded in 1963 with the aim of preserving and recording the history of the area and its people. The fledgling collection of artefacts was first housed in a rented premises in the main street of Tanunda.
